Haiti Medical Mission

In 2014 I spent seven days in southwestern Haiti with the Haitian American Nurses Association of Florida (HANA), a group of Haitian nurses based in Miami. I was there to document the trip in photos and video. We were based in Port-Salut, and every morning the team loaded into vans and buses for a different village, set up for the day, and came back at night. The days were long and tiring, and also some of the most satisfying work I've done.

One of those villages was Maniche. I'd been there five times before, so many of the faces in the first part of this gallery aren't strangers. They're people I'd come to know over earlier visits.

What's in the gallery

It opens in Maniche: the crowd gathered outside before the clinic opened, people waiting behind caution tape, an elderly couple sitting together for their turn, and nurses taking blood pressure and running check-ups. From there it moves through the other villages, with volunteers handing out aid, the Medical Mission and Toy Distribution building with patients lined up outside, and the meal afterward, where kids ate rice off paper plates and a mother smiled with her child.
