Haiti in Black & White

Between 2009 and 2014 I made six trips to Haiti: to Maniche and the villages around it in the south, to Port-au-Prince, and in 2014 on a medical mission with HANA. Most of the time I was photographing in color, but some faces and moments read better without it. These are those frames: people looking straight into the lens, kids at play, women carrying water and baskets home, patients waiting their turn at the clinic.

What's in the gallery

Portraits first: an elderly woman in a black hat, a boy holding a piece of fruit, a girl in a white sun hat with her brother, a boy with a scar across his forehead, an older man's face lit from the side. Then daily life: a woman walking a country road with a broom, children playing a game in the dirt, boys drinking from a fountain, a girl carrying a bucket on her head, a vendor selling books and eggs on the sidewalk, and a crowded tap tap loading up in town.

See these places in color in Haitian Countryside, Port-au-Prince and Haiti Medical Mission. More black and white in Black & White.
