Charleston, South Carolina

Charleston rewards slow walking. Rainbow Row gets the postcard shots, sure, but the real material is in the alleys behind it. Wrought iron gates, gas lanterns still lit at noon, a courtyard garden you'd never find without wandering off the main street.

I shot this over a few days downtown, mostly in the historic district. Early mornings for the empty cobblestone streets before the horse carriages start up. Midday in the markets. Late afternoon light on the pastel building facades along the Battery, when the color really shows.

The historic homes and their ironwork, which is some of the most detailed I've photographed anywhere in the US. Waterfront shots along the harbor and the Battery. And the quieter street scenes — hidden alleys, market stalls, reflections in the puddles after a quick afternoon rain, which happens most days in summer.
